I'm Back again

Man what a last few weeks. I had a glitch in training for Boston, but now I have healed and I'm back running again. The injury to my right calf I believed was caused by running on a treadmill. At least thats what I'm blaming it on. 3 weeks ago I was running a fast tempo 6 miler when I felt a slight twinge on the inside of my calf. I kept going and like normal I picked up the pace with 800 to go. Right close to the end of the run the twinge turned to pain which I could usually run through but this was different. It felt as though someone stabbed me in the calf. I jumped off the treadmill and walked it out and the pain seemed to subside.

Throughout the rest of the day I felt extremely tight and bruised. The pain was still there as well. So now being 14 weeks out from Boston I had to make a decision to take a few weeks off or gut it out. I still continued my swim schedule and added a few easy bikes with nothing but spinning. Learning from experience is me and after a week of not running I wanted to see how it felt. I went outside is sub zero weather and ran an easy 3 miler. The dullness was not bad during the run but after and into the evening the pain seemed to subside. Yes could it be just a wierd phantom pain and I could get back my mileage, NOT. The next day I tried another 3 miler and felt the pain coming on before I finished. That night I decided that it wasn't just a phantom pain I needed time to heal.

So going from 50 miles a week to nothing is tough. Luckily the kids are in the mist of basketball season and there is a game practically everynight. I was still able to swim, moslty pulls and puching off with the left leg, and trainer rides easy easy easy. A full three weeks without running thats a first.

Monday, I set my sights on a 3 miler and I went slow and concentrated on my form. Yesturday a 5 miler and I sure can tell that I took 3 weeks off. Toward the end I started getting back in the grove. I wanted to just run easy 8min to 8:30 miles and keep the heart rate down. Which worked for the most part. I had to deal with the frigid weather 11 degrees wind chill 0. The run went well I averaged 8:05 with no pain what so ever.

This next week or so will strickly be vamping back up the mileage. Nothing to crazy. I will run a 10 miler on Saturday maybe add some speed work back in next week.

Boston is now 11 weeks away. My goal now is to finish and enjoy the race. I wanted to blast out a new PR but we will see when the race closes in.
